What We Taught Kids About Cooking at Camp

       We taught kids how to cook bread on a stick during Fantasy in the Forest. We also let them sample a cup of Lental Soup, something most 6-9 year olds have never even heard of. The cooking class was supposed to teach kids that cooking can be a fun activity, and that they can cook for themselves.

Our cooking workshop was based off of, The Tale of Despereux the Princess Pea and Despereux led the activities.

Making Baked Apples at Camp

After a full day of travel and setting up camp, Anne and Jack had dinner with their family. “Wow, food tastes really great at camp,” said Jack.

“Mom, did you bring the stuff for s’mores?” asked Anne.

“I did, but we will make those tomorrow night. Let’s try something different. Have you ever tried Baked Apples?”

Anne shook her head, and Jack asked, “How do you make them? Are they good?”

Their Mother laughed, “Get the apples, butter, foil, and cinnamon sugar from the car and I’ll show you,” she said, clearing a space on the picnic table.

As they waited impatiently for the apples to cook, their mother showed them how to make iced tea. The apples, cooking in the embers of the fire, smelled delicious; almost like an apple pie, with the smells of cinnamon, sugar and butter mixing with the tangy scent of apple.

“Wow, this is so much better than s’mores,” said Anne carefully taking a bite of the hot apple treat.

 Jack was too busy eating to say anything.

How We Taught Kids to Roll-Up Their Sleeping Bags

The Princess from, The Princess and the Pea, showed kids how to roll up their sleeping bags in pairs. One child would fold the bag in half long ways. The other would sit on one end, so that their friend could tightly roll the sleeping bag up.

Jack and Dad were in the garage. The family’s sleeping bags were on the floor, and Dad was grabbing a lantern from the attic. “Hey, Jack, why don’t you practice rolling your sleeping bag?” Dad called

So Jack picked up his red sleeping bag and went to the front yard. Soon Dad came to help. Jack carefully folded the bag in half and Dad sat on one end. Then Jack was able to roll the bag up tightly. Dad looped some string and tied up the bag, and then Jack stuffed the roll into a laundry duffle.

 “All done!” he cried happily!

How We Taught Kids To Pack the Right Clothes for Camp

Campers at Fantasy in the Forest got to play a game called the best dressed camper.  In this game there were two bag, one bag had the proper clothing to wear at camp in it, the other did not. We let the kids dress up a camper and then decide which camper was best dressed for a day out at camp!

How to Select Clothing for a Camping Trip

    Anne woke up very happy on Friday morning. Today, she and her family were going to go camping. Mom had told Anne that she needed to pack some clothes for the weekend. Anne laid out her pink tutu and a sparkly blue top to pack, but Mom said, ”I am sorry Anne, but these clothes are too nice to take to camp, let me show you what you should wear outdoors.”

Mom went into Anne’s closet and showed Anne an old red t-shirt and some blue jeans. “These are the right kinds of clothes to wear.” She said, “If you wear clothes like these you won’t need to worry about ruining them.”

"Anne and Jack Go Camping" go camping is a children's story book written by the members of Troop 24065. It was formatted by Kate Blair, eddited by Verity Cheslo, and illustrated by Rachel Devries.
Follow siblings Anne and Jack as they learn all about camping.

    Between each chapter of "Anne and Jack Go Camping" I will be posting an explanation of how the chapter tied into activities and workshops held at Fantasy in the Forest.
